Review: Australis Velourlips Matte Lip Cream

vlips2Every cosmetics company seems to be coming out with these new ‘liquid lipsticks’, promising to bring you opaque color that will cement itself to your mouth somehow without drying it out. I’m skeptical, and also hate the feeling of my mouth being tight.

I had pretty low expectations for the Australis Velourlips, because most of the drugstore liquid lipsticks I’ve tried have been pretty rough.

First of all, the shade I chose, Rio-d, is NEON, like straight up neon orange. It definitely doesn’t look as intense in the packaging, but I actually like the color, and I’ll probably be able to pull it off in the summer when I’m more bronzed.

The second thing that stuck out to me was the god. damn. scent. Why? Why would someone think ‘Oh hey, people are going to be wearing this RIGHT UNDER THEIR NOSES, why don’t we create the most strange, offensive scent imaginable so they’ll have something to rage at all day?’ The product smells like perfume-y, fruity, plastic, and I am not a fan. If you can get past a scent lingering around your face all day, continue reading…

I thought that the Velourlips was really comfortable to wear and didn’t feel very drying. I kind of forgot that I was wearing it after a while, which is a great sign for me. I also noticed that though while eating, some excess color came off on my food, my lips still looked nice and opaque after I was finished (another good sign).

Aside from the scent, my main drawback to this product is how

How my lips felt.

How my lips felt.

shrivelley it made my lips look. It reminded me of the sad kidnapped mermaids that Ursula had in the Little Mermaid… (no one? ok.) It really brought out the fine lines in my lips, especially after a few hours of wear. I think that comes with the territory when it comes to liquid lipsticks though, so you’ll have to decide if that’s a deal breaker.

I think for the price (about ten bucks), I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and feel of Velourlips. It had its’ pros and cons, so its up to you to decide whether it’s worth checking out. I just wish they’d cut it out with the scents!
